Who we are

We are Submission Lab, a non-profit Martial Arts School located in Dunedin, New Zealand, promoting an open, inclusive and non-political environment where grappling and related martial arts can be practiced safely and positively by everyone, regardless of abilities, experience or affiliation.

Submission Lab welcomes all grappling enthusiasts to share knowledge. Our classes and sparring sessions are open for all local and travelling martial artists of all gyms, and we encourage our members to cross-train and compete for the gym of their choice. We also regularly offer seminars to expose our members and visitors to more and different techniques.

We are a non-profit incorporated society, which is a legal entity belonging to the members and administered by a committee elected annually by the members.

History

Submission Lab was created in May 2017, when a group of around 20 students from myBJJ Dunedin joined forces with 8 students from Exon Grappling to create a new club. Since then, we have been joined by practitioners from other BJJ gyms and by new members. We are very proud of our mixed lineage and the diversity and vibrancy this creates is great.

Most members in the club practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Figure 1 below shows the current distribution of BJJ ranks in the club, and Figure 2 the distribution of club of origin of our current members.
