International competition achievements

Craig 'Frosty' Shaw

(brown belt 2014)

Frosty started training in 2007 and received his brown belt from Cristiano Felipe Alves in 2014. He teaches gi classes suitable to both beginners and advanced grapplers focusing on no-nonsense core techniques and the self-defense aspects of jiu-jitsu. Built like a tank with no neck and very strong short arms and legs, Frosty is very hard to submit.

Peter Clinch

(brown belt 2014)

Pete started training in 2007 and received his brown belt from Cristiano Felipe Alves in 2014. He is mainly a no gi grappler focusing on the application of jiu-jitsu to MMA. Pete is a strong and experienced MMA and grappling competitor, with an MMA record of 5W/1L and is a former ISKA middle weight title holder. He is a very technical instructor teaching no gi and MMA classes at the academy. With a combination of great technique and great strength, Pete makes Benoit look like a white belt when they roll 😊.

Jamie Cavanagh

(purple belt 2014)

Jamie started training in 2009 and received his purple belt from Cristiano Felipe Alves in 2014. He teaches both gi and no gi classes at the academy, and is the dedicated teacher of the popular 6am morning classes. Jamie is our half guard expert and an active and successful competitor. He is also an avid yoga practitioner and his extra flexibility makes him a very tricky guard player.

Jarrod Halligan

(purple belt 2014)

Jarrod started training in 2009 and received his purple belt in 2014 from Stuart Marks and Mario Yokoyama. He teaches beginners gi classes at the academy. Jarrod favours gi grappling and likes gi chokes, aided by his very strong grip strength, although he never shies away from a good no gi roll and has become quite proficient at heel hooks.

Matt Gaston

(purple belt 2017)

Matt started training in 2011 and received his purple belt in 2017 from Stuart Marks and teaches kids classes at the academy. Although competent in the gi, Matt prefers no gi grappling and also trains in wrestling. He is a resilient grappler, notoriously hard to submit and with a very dangerous reverse triangle from under side control.

Patrick Taylor

(blue belt 2014)

Pat started training in 2012 and received his blue belt in 2014 from Stuart Marks and Mario Yokoyama. Being a physiotherapist, Pat has a very analytical way of thinking about the biomechanical aspects of the techniques, which allows him to teach very valuable beginners gi classes at the academy. Pat is a strong individual with experience in judo (brown belt) and wrestling and enjoys both gi and no gi grappling, making him a well-rounded practitioner. He has a particularly good way of finishing twisters.
